Energy and forest biomass

The conference will be held in Trento on October 8, 2010, and will represent a unique opportunity to get a comprehensive update on the status of forest biomass harvesting, processing and transport technology and techniques on a global scale.

Within the scope of the Cost framework (European cooperation in science and technology), the European union has launched a new network to stimulate cooperation between the most important European research centres dealing with biomass for energy harvesting and supply. The goal of this initiative is to further reinforce Europe's leading role in the field of sustainable forest biomass utilization, since this huge resource is still largely unutilized due to the technical difficulties of establishing economically and environmentally viable supply chains.

In October 2009, Cost launched Action Fp0902 'Development and harmonisation of new operational research and assessment procedures for sustainable forest biomass supply', which supports intensifying communication and cooperation among the most important research institutions dealing with the subject, through a joint work program, meetings, exchanges and conferences. At present, the Action gathers institutes from 25 Cost member countries, as well as from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa and the Usa. The intense presence of non- European experts puts this Action among the most global among those launched by the Cost domain forests, their products and services.

The event does not only address researchers, but it offers something for all stakeholders in the field of forest biomass for energy, such as technicians, managers, consultants and entrepreneurs. Presentations will address practical topics, using simple language and matter-of-fact concepts. All presentations will be given in English, but simultaneous translation into Italian will also be provided. Specific attention will be devoted to debate, so that the audience will have the opportunity to discuss specific problems with some of the best experts on the global scene. Speakers are all renowned specialists, coming from the best international research centres, and all extremely competent with the sustainable harvesting and supply of forest biomass. The conference is organized around two main sessions: the morning session will offer a worldwide technology outlook, whereas specific technical subjects will be presented in the afternoon session. Both sessions will be conducted in English, with simultaneous translation into Italian.

Participation to this conference has been approved by the National council of registered foresters (Conaf) as valid for acquiring 0.6 training credits. The conference includes a satellite exhibition with commercial and institutional stands.
