Robots of the future

The European project FourByThree is an alliance made up of 15 European partners who will design, build and test pioneering robotic solutions able to collaborate safely and efficiently with human operators in industrial manufacturing companies. The project, which will last 36 months, has a total budget of 6.9 million euros and is partly funded by the EU within the European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020.

The Cnr - Italian National Research Council takes part in the FourByThree project with two of its institutes and respective facilities: the Institute of Industrial Technology and Automation (Itia, Milan) and the Institute of Cognitive Science and Technology (Istc, Rome). The Cnr-Itia researches will be involved in the elastic-dynamic modelling and in the development of the robot controller of new families of modular and lightweight robots developed from the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (Dfki). The safety-by-control and the variable-stiffness behaviour of the robot will be the goal of the controller design besides the high performances in terms of accuracy and dynamics required by the FourByThree applications. In addition, the Itia researchers will be involved in the development of the modules that supervise the robot motion and programming in a complex unstructured environment with humans – i.e., the efforts will be dedicated to the development of innovative robot motion planning modules based on probabilistic description of the task, Cartesian interpolation granting robot dynamics etc. These modules will be designed and developed in close collaboration with the Istc researchers. The Cnr-Istc researchers will focus on the investigation of Human-Robot Interaction aspects while addressing cooperative scenarios in which human operators share the working space with robotic platforms.

The FourByThree aims at providing a control system capable of harmonizing activities performed by robotics platforms and human operators when acting in close interaction. The researchers will work cooperatively to develop the ecosystem of modules that will boost the adoption of new families of robots in safe human-robot cooperation in real industrial manufacturing environments. The design and development of an AI-based planning system will be pursued providing the FourByThree infrastructure with multimodal personalized interactions and safety critical planning and execution capabilities. Final goal is the one of synthesizing a control system capable of harmonizing activities performed by robotic platforms and human operators when acting in close interaction.
