Routes project

The first conference of End Users of the project Routes (www.eu-routes.org), that is funded under the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union and started in May 2011, will be held on October 25, in Rome, at the headquarters of the National Research Council, (Marconi Room).

The project aims to set up a panel of innovative techniques for the effective management of sewage sludge produced in wastewater treatment plants and to assess their technical, economical and environmental sustainability in real scale plants. The Board of End-Users currently includes 28 partners, including national and international organizations, Smes, public and private research centers, professionals, regional and national environmental agencies, municipalities and ministries.

In this first conference 18 oral presentations are scheduled. Some of them will show the results obtained at the midterm phase of the project, regarding the stabilization treatments, the minimization of production, the interaction sludge - land for the agricultural utilization and the adoption of an innovative thermal process for the final disposal. Other presentations will describe the current state of sludge management in Europe and the U.S., including legislative aspects. Four presentations will be delivered by partners of the Board of End-Users and will describe the problems and the point of view of companies directly involved in the management of sewage sludge. The results of a parallel project (End-O-Sludg) funded by the European Commission in the same call will be presented as well.
