Winter school on physics and application on T-rays

The 6th optoelectronics and photonics Winter School is coordinated by the Center for materials & microsystems in conjunction with the University of Glasgow and is organized with the scientific support of Cnr-Institute for photonics and nanotechnologies (Ifn). It will take place on February 20-26, 2011 in Fai della Paganella, Trento (Italy) and will focus on T-rays physics.

How T-rays interact with matter is what makes them so interesting. Understanding the physics behind these phenomena is, according to the organizers, fundamental. The main topics of the course will be 'sources and detectors': generation of pulsed, continuous, coherent, or incoherent terahertz radiation is often mandatory as spontaneous emission of bodies is very weak, while an incredibly high number of sensing principles can be used; 'systems and applications': having the components is not enough to take profit from T-rays. Optics, mirrors, sources, detectors combined together generate the added value. Terahertz technology can play a fundamental role, as a complementary of replacing technology, as well as in new application fields.

The school aims at providing a place where scientific results and experiences can be exchanged between students and speakers to learn about recent developments in universities, research centers and companies around the world. Deadline for registration is January 31, 2011.
