Swup-med: a project for available water resources in cultivation  

Previous studies on the stratigraphic and hydrogeological characteristics of the alluvial coastal plain of the Volturno River allowed the boundary to be drawn between seawater saline intrusion into the aquifer and the freshwater aquifer from inland sources and partly from precipitation (the more superficial part).

The latter is decidedly brackish, caused by contamination due to intense groundwater use for agricultural purposes during the summer and the unsuitable drilling of wells. This situation affects much of the plain (at least 3.000 hectares) and at least two-thirds of the plain may be said to be at risk, hence about 9.000 hectares in all. Studies of the possible trend in the saltwater/freshwater interface in the coastal zone of the alluvial plain of the Volturno River were compared with those obtained for other intensively farmed alluvial coastal plains in Italy.

This research project aims to study qualitative and quantitative parameters of lower Volturno coastal plain ground-water. Morphologic, hydrogeologic and stratigraphic analysis were collected in 12.000 ha of Volturno River plane to obtain original and interesting data information for the farmers. On the basis of geological indications highlighted in the previous studies, the activity performed with the present project, up to 30 wells were monitored. In particular electrical conductivity of the water and other chemical analysis were performed.

The results showed that salinity affected about 4.000 ha of this area. From results is evident the evolution of the interface of sweet/salt water in the coastal area and alluvional plane of Volturno River. The stratigraphic analysis of boreholes, hydrogeologic study and the evaluation of chemical analysis of irrigation water can be used for irrigation management in the area of Volturno River reveals that the values of electrical conductivity falls mainly in the class c3, namely from about 0.75 dS m-1 at 2.25 dS m-1 which could influence negatively the crops less tolerant to salinity of the area.

The data obtained will be computerized and monitored for proper evaluation of groundwater quantity and quality and irrigation strategies to be adopted for short-term irrigation sustainability in southern Italian contexts.
