Poplars and willows: in Orvieto the 5th world symposium

The 5th edition of the International poplar symposium (Ips-V), organized under the umbrella of the International union of forest research organizations (Iufro) working unit 2.08.04 and under the sponsorship of the Food and agriculture organization of the United nation (Fao), will be held in Orvieto, Italy, 20-25 September 2010. It is jointly arranged by the Italian agricultural research council (Cra), Cnr-Institute of agro-environmental and forest biology (Ibaf), the University of Tuscia in Viterbo and the Poplar national commission, within the Ministry of agriculture and forestry.
The theme of the conference 'Poplars and willows: from research models to multipurpose trees for a biobased society' addresses the increasing needs of a low-carbon, bio-based society to mobilize increasing wood and environmental resources, by utilizing the genetic and ecological potentials of poplar and willow trees. The symposium will be carried out in three days while several scientific sessions dealing with the most relevant experimental, technical and social subjects concerning poplar research will be developed by internationally renowned, leading scientists of this field.
In the last 4 years, since Ips-IV held in Nanjing, China, a wealth of information has been gathered on the links among physiology, molecular genetics and genomics to understand and improve adaptation and yield of populus as a bioenergy and timber crop and as provider of environmental services.

A scientific and technical excursion in central and northern Italy will also be arranged in the following two days in order to visit some of the most interesting poplar and willow experimental trials and pilot centres for biomass, phytoremediation and bioenergy.
The Iufro poplar and willow genetics working party 2.08.04 convenes the International poplar symposium (Ips) every four years for the presentation and discussion of the most recent and important scientific findings in populus and salix genetics, molecular biology, physiology, and ecology.
