Summer school on microphysics of clouds      

Cnrs-Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur and Cnr-Institute of atmospheric sciences and climate (Isac) organize the international school on 'Fluctuations and turbulence in the microphysics and dynamics of clouds' that will take place in the island of Porquerolles (France) on 2-10 September, 2010. Goal of the school is to gather experts in atmospheric sciences together with specialists of turbulent transport and of the Lagrangian statistical approach to fluid dynamics. The courses will be divided in five themes: state of the art in turbulent transport, models and theory; state of the art in turbulent transport, numerics and experiments, atmospheric turbulence, convection and clouds; clouds microphysics; applications to meteorology and climatology.

The formation and life of clouds is intrinsically linked to the dynamical properties of small particles transported in the atmosphere. These can be either the small aerosols on which water vapor condensates or the droplets that constitute the cloud. The role which is played by the turbulence of the airflow is still the matter of intense debates. Twenty students among the participants to the school 'Fluctuations and turbulence in the microphysics and dynamics of clouds' will have the opportunity to attend an accompanying Eufar training school that will  take place in Hyères, close to Porquerolles. The aim of this following event is to provide participants with training and education for turbulence research on clouds via airborne data. Selected participants - maximum 20 - will attend theoretical and technical lectures, and will make in-situ measurements by flying with an instrumented Atr42 aircraft. Data collected during the flights will then be analysed by the participants.

Participants who are interested in attending this formation should indicate it in the application form. All costs related to this school are covered by Eufar (including round-trip to Hyères).
