Workshop: cellular communication

The Cnr-Institute of Biophysics (Ibf) is organizing the workshop 'Methods for the investigation of ion transport machinery in biological Membranes' next October 16, at the Italian Institute of Culture in Tokyo. The seminar, sponsored by Cnr, Embassy of Italy in Tokyo,Tohoku University and University of Fukui, will be held within 'Italy in Japan', the event that has brought to Japan this year many examples of the Italian flair, culture as well as science and technology.

Italian and Japanese researchers will debate on cellular communication mechanisms. Methods to investigate the molecular machines that mediate electrical and chemical signals at the level of cellular membranes will be illustrated. “The signals mediated by the ion transport machinery are important in several biological processes, such as the brain functioning and many pathologies, from cancer to genetic diseases, as well as in the development of plant systems and microorganisms”, says Franco Gambale, researcher at Cnr-Ibf and workshop coordinator. “On the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the first Italian biophysics meeting, this seminar will improve the already excellent relationships existing between Italian and Japanese biophysicists and molecular biologists”.
