Cost science night

'Cost science night' was recently held in Brussels and aimed to showcase the impact of science and technology networks on Europe's society. At this event representatives of the European institutions and countries had a unique chance to meet researchers leading Cost Actions, who explained and showed how these pan-European science and technology networks contribute confidently to Europe's future and welfare and to daily life in Europe and beyond. Participants not only took part in a lively discussion on key topics with wide societal impact such as human rights, forestry and extreme events, nano-materials, Dna sequencing, dendrimer-based therapies and drugs, chemistry, sustainable biofuels and energy efficiency in buildings, but also in the excitement of astonishing scientific experiments.

Among the successful Cost Actions, 'Eco-sustainable food packaging for safe food conservation' whose chair is Clara Silvestre, researcher at Cnr -Institute of Chemistry and Technology of Polymers (Ictp).

This Action aims at exploiting the potentiality of polymer nanotechnology in the area of food packaging (Pnfp) treating in a complete way the demanding needs of the users, such as health, environment, taste, cost and the specific requirements of the food industry. It will identify the barriers (in research and technology, safety, standardisation, trained workforce and technology transfer) that prevent a complete successful development of Pnfp and will indicate the strategies to proceed further.
